Alternatives: most of these attractions have cheaper alternatives, although of course not as good as the original: books, CDs, DVDs, films, the internet, pen pals (e.g., as one of my friends called them, “long-haired dictionaries”), consulates, and local ethnic restaurants (e.g. Berkeley has a German restaurant).
